What’s Your Excuse?

Here are some of the Most Common Excuses to Not Visiting the Dentist

At Stumpf Dental, we cannot even tell you how many times we’ve heard people say things like…“I’ve been meaning to make an appointment but I just haven’t gotten around to it.”

With that in mind, here are some of the most frequent excuses people have for not visiting the dentist.

  • Going to the dentist is too expensive!

Actually, the opposite is true! While quality health care certainly can be costly, the investment in preventive dental procedures such as cleanings, exams and necessary x-rays can save thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars in more extensive treatment later. The sooner you go, the less it will cost!

  • Dental appointments are uncomfortable

While a dental visit may not be as much fun as a night at the movies, it’s not as difficult as it was decades ago. Modern anesthetics and dental techniques have made a trip to the dentist more pleasant than ever before. Express your concerns to your dentist and chances are she or he will have a solution. If you don’t think your dental team is doing all they can for your comfort, it may be time to find one who does!

  • I’m not in any pain so I don’t need to go!

Even if you take fantastic care of your teeth and gums, waiting until you have pain means you waited too long! Early cavities and gum disease are painless. Waiting for symptoms can lead to complicated expensive treatment and even tooth loss!

Snacks for Healthy Teeth

Smart Snacks for Healthy Teeth

Getting your kids to eat fruit, veggies and yogurt instead of candy, chips and ice cream might feel like pulling teeth. But it’s important to encourage them to eat “smart” snacks to keep their teeth – and body – healthy. Whether you’re transitioning your older kids to a healthier, balanced diet or just getting started with a little ones, here are some tips for healthy snacking: Set the tone. Your kids mimic what you do, so it’s important that you eat smart snacks too. And be sure to practice good oral hygiene in front of your kids; if you brush and floss after meals and snacks, your kids will too.

Get Creative with Healthy Snacks

Get creative with snacks. Show your kids that healthy snacks can be fun! Prepare tasty combinations, such as apple slices with peanut butter, fruit smoothies, meat and cheese rollups, or yogurt sprinkled with granola and bananas.Keep your kids involved. When you make your grocery list, ask your kids to brainstorm about what kinds of food they’d like to eat. This is a good opportunity to help them understand what’s good for their teeth and what’s not. Then go grocery shopping together and teach your kids how to read the Nutrition Facts label so that they can check the sugar content. Prepare nutritious meals. Snacking smart is great for your teeth, but so is eating well-balanced lunches and dinners. Make sure to add fruits and vegetables to every meal so that your kids become accustomed to them.

What Do Women (and Men!) Want?

The Must Have in Initial Attractiveness

It may be a first date or it may be a long term relationship, but whatever the goal, young women and men have clearly stated what the “must-haves” are-at least when it comes to initial attractiveness.

What Are the Sexes Looking For

Recently a survey was done of over 5,000 single adults, and the results were surprising! Fortunately, trust and respect ranked as essential elements in a potential partner. But before you can even get that far, close to half of the people surveyed claim they research someone online before meeting them, with 38% saying they would cancel the date if they didn’t like what they found!

Perhaps the most interesting part of the survey involved what others are judged on. The results differed for men and women, with women ranking their dates clothing (58%) over hair (53%), and vice versa for men (51% for hair vs 45% for clothes). Fortunately, at the bottom of the list, only 9% judge others on the electronic device they carry. And towards the top for both sexes came grammar-so watch what you say!!But least surprising (to us anyway) was the fact that the number one thing both sexes look at when sizing up their dates are their……. teeth!

Take Care of Your Teeth!shutterstock_101124142

According to one survey participant, “Taking care of your teeth is a good indicator of hygiene.” How true! Anthropologist Helen Fisher, a professor at Rutgers University, agrees. She say’s “From a Darwinian perspective, good teeth are a real indication of your health-how much you drink, smoke, and what you’re eating.” Even more so, yellow, stained, uneven and otherwise unsightly teeth can leave a first impression that is hard to overturn.Whether you are single, married, dating, or not interested-a healthy attractive smile says so much about you. That’s why regular preventive dental care is one of the most important things you can do for your appearance and physical well-being.
